Robert Hugh Benson - This book is intended for the "man in the street," who, after all, has a certain claim on our consideration, since Jesus Christ came to save his soul. The man in the street, like the author, is unable to discourse profoundly upon the Fathers, or to decide where scholars disagree in matters of simple scholarship. This is a terrific book to introduce other men and women in the street to what the Catholic Faith is all about. The Conversion of Ratisbonne - These are the first-hand accounts of the 1842 conversion of Alphonse Ratisbonne, declared by the Church to be the direct result of the miraculous intervention of Mary. They should be of more than antiquarian interest to modern readers because Ratisbonne was himself, until the moment of his conversion, very much a modern. He was above all worldly. Although his family was nominally Jewish, he had nearly as much contempt for traditional Jewish belief and practice as he had for the Catholic Church. Despite the fact that contemporary Churchmen play it down, it is perhaps the most dramatic conversion story since St. Paul was struck down on the road to Damascus. On January 20, 1842, wealthy banker Alphonse Ratisbonne, a non-observant Jew who had nothing but contempt for the Catholic Faith, was converted by the Blessed Mother herself when she appeared to him in the Church of Sant? Andrea delle Fratte in Rome. The story caused a sensation at the time (hundreds of strangers showed up to witness Ratisbonne's baptism), and naturally drew the attention of the Vatican. After a thorough inquiry, Pope Gregory XVI declared the event a true miracle.

This book brings together in one volume two first-person accounts of the miracle by the two men who knew the story best: Ratisbonne himself, and his friend, Baron Theodore de Bussieres, who was with him when the miracle occurred. The Life of St. Catherine of Siena - St. Catherine of Siena (1347 - 1380) was a twin, the 24th and 25th children born to Giacomo and Lapa Benincasa, and one of the most extraordinary Saints in the history of the Church.
